A new taste on the horizon by Thomas Walk
Our Rondo grape is an interspecific variety which has its own special character. It does not need to be sprayed at all, at least not in our part of the world in Southern Ireland.
At the panel talk ‚Irish Vineyards past-present-future‘ at Ballymaloe, Midelton, Co. Cork in May 2024 we spoke about climate change and how it affects both established wine-growing countries and new emerging ones.
The established countries especially in the South - scientists say up to 70% of them - will be experiencing more and more problems due to climate change while Northern France, Belgium and others may benefit from it.
Ireland stands a good chance to benefit, too, but needs to go for interspecific varieties because of its milder and more humid maritime climate.
Wine lovers may have to adapt their palate somewhat to get used to that new "interspecific" taste.
Rondo stands out in particular thanks to its fruity taste of cherries and blackberries.
Interspecific varieties cannot really be compared to the established grape varieties that wine lovers are used to. We therefore suggest a wine tasting within interspecific varieties, or as in our case a ‚vertical‘ tasting through the various Rondo vintages and varieties, such as Ruby‚ Velvet or Rosé.
As none of our wines are cuveés you can experience the genuine character of each summer.
